Last night, our temperature dropped to 46 degrees! We are definitely in a new season and adjustments are being made. Bedding just changed from cotton to flannel, quilts to down comforters and cozy throws added to the couch. Soup is bubbling on the stove and the copious amount of pears have been canned, made into preserves, bread, shrub and even a cordial. They still cover the ground and I’m tempted to dig out my food dryer, although I still have dried pears from years gone by.
This time of year always challenges me a bit. Unwinding from all of the busyness of summer is hard. I find myself studying Road Scholar catalogs and dreaming of far-off adventures. I know there’s still plenty to do but its not as “in your face” as it is in the warmer months. The garden is turning brown yet still needs attention. Figuring out a bed for garlic and whether to plant a crop of peas for that early harvest in spring.
The colors are more subdued and as I take my afternoon walk, I notice the subtlety of the greens against the burgundy and gold. Soon it will be winter and gray and blue will replace these warmer tones. Maybe I’ll try to capture it with paint or photos or maybe I’ll just curl up on the couch and eat soup…
