Why Live on an Island?

What makes island life so unique compared to living on the mainland?

First and foremost is the immediate access to nature. Last week, while my daughter and I were staying “in town,” she wanted to go for a run. On the island, her routine is simple—she just laces up her shoes and heads out of the driveway. No need to drive to trailheads or navigate crowded trails. Similarly, when I want to walk my dog, I head out my driveway and, within minutes, find myself at the beach. It’s rare to encounter a car or even another person—just peace and quiet.

Second, the stunning, ever-changing views. On an island, you’re surrounded by nature, water, mountains, and other islands—no driving required to find scenic beauty. These breathtaking vistas are an everyday part of life.

Third, island living embraces outdoor activities. Kayaking, hiking, beachcombing, gardening, or simply gathering firewood isn’t reserved for the weekends—it’s woven into daily life. Being outdoors becomes second nature here.

Privacy, seclusion, and security also set islands apart. With fewer neighbors and the comforting knowledge that anyone you meet on the road is likely a friend or a guest of another resident, it’s easy to feel at home.

Finally, my favorite aspect of island life is the challenge of innovation and adaptability. Living without instant access to stores or services pushes you to get creative—improvising, substituting, or even doing without. This problem-solving approach makes life more fun and rewarding.

Island properties offer a blend of adventure, natural beauty, and serene living, while mainland homes often prioritize convenience and connectivity. Which lifestyle appeals to you?
